Israel Puterman, DMD, MSD, is an expert in periodontics, implant surgery, and the restoration and revision of tooth-supporting structures. Since 2011, the year he opened his practice, Washingtonian magazine has named him one of the DC area’s top periodontists.

Dr. Puterman offers a rare combination of training and experience that allows him to address even the most complex cases. In addition to his post-graduate specialization in periodontics, he also completed a three-year residency in implant dentistry. While periodontists study implants as part of their training, Dr. Puterman’s additional residency training gives him a level of training and expertise that few in the country have.

Dr. Puterman has placed thousands of dental implants for patients and performs procedures daily to resolve teeth, bone, and gum concerns. As a Bethesda periodontist, he has comprehensive knowledge about the features of tooth aesthetics and function, and he provides treatment in a gentle and personalized manner.

Experience and Education

Dr. Puterman has been serving in private practice since 2008. Beyond working with Bethesda patients, he has previously taught as a clinical instructor for Loma Linda University’s School of Dentistry in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the University of Maryland on the Dean’s Faculty, but now continues to solely focus on his patients.

A Bethesda periodontist, Dr. Puterman holds licensure in the District of Columbia and the states of Maryland and Virginia. He and his staff are also licensed in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and he is one of the few providers in Greater DC with certification in IV sedation.

Dr. Israel Puterman received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Boston University. He went on to complete the Implant Dentistry residency at Loma Linda University in California. Full-time residency in implant dentistry is rare; only three such programs exist in the United States. His intense training included advanced work in bone grafting, microsurgery, and prosthodontics. The skills he developed through this experience continue to distinguish his work in implant surgery.

Expertise in the soft tissue aspects of dentistry can significantly improve the aesthetic outcome of dental implants. For this reason, Dr. Puterman took part in an additional three-year residency to become a periodontist and went on to earn a Master of Science in Dentistry. Today, Bethesda and DC patients benefit from his knowledge of surgical techniques and dental anatomy, his commitment to high-quality outcomes, and his attention to detail.

Scholarship and Recognition

Dr. Israel Puterman has contributed to the dental field as an academic and leader. He is the co-author of research articles on fixed prostheses, implant dentistry, and dental restoration in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and other leading publications in the profession. He is also a reviewer for the Journal of Periodontics, which is the official journal of the American Academy of Periodontology. The American Dental Association previously selected him to join other researchers in reviewing literature on the success rates of dental implants.

Dr. Puterman served several years as committee co-chair of the Nation’s Capital Dental Meeting (now the Mid-Atlantic Dental Meeting). Additionally, he sat on the Dean’s Faculty at the University of Maryland’s Department of Periodontics and acted as a resident representative for the California Society of Periodontists.

While working as a Bethesda periodontist, Dr. Puterman has been the recipient of numerous awards for both academic and practical applications in the profession. Awarding organizations include the California Society of Periodontists, Western Society of Periodontists, American Academy of Implant Dentistry Annual Meeting, and Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Personal

Dr. Israel Puterman grew up in Montreal, Canada before moving to Boston for dental school. During his time in the program, he saw the impact that dental implants were beginning to have in patient care and decided to make this complex field his lifelong area of focus.

After completing his degrees and post-graduate work, Dr. Puterman moved to the Washington, DC area with his wife, Jennifer. While he is open to the idea of his young sons, Asher and Nathaniel, growing up cheering for the Capitals and Nationals, his heart still belongs to the Canadiens and long-lost Expos.
